GSA Stars II Vendors Cloud Fault Tolerance with Disaster Recovery (DR)
With the advent of cloud fault tolerance technology, the ability to recover virtual servers from catastrophic events has greatly improved from a traditional bare metal restore to automated virtual recovery within minutes. While these server virtualization and disaster recovery configurations may be involved and require careful planning, most business leaders do not adequately assess their IT systems risk exposure and invest in a credible server virtualization and disaster recovery solution.Traditional Backup and Disaster Recovery plans need the Cloud for Business ContinuityThe traditional backup and recovery plan is usually a binder collecting dust on the shelf and not totally implemented or comprehensively tested. The primary reason why backup and recovery strategies fall short is because they usually does not include a periodic test and verification for full recovery confirmation. Often, the backup recovery software and tools are outdated and in poor condition. For instance, backup tape media has a shelf life and when the ribbon has reached its end-life, data may not be successfully extracted. Optical media has a greater shelf-life but the systems for large data set backup to optical are expensive. The approach to a successfully implemented cloud fault tolerance and disaster recovery solution needs to mirror the production hardware and software environment. One significant advantage to cloud virtualization is the portability of virtual servers from various server hardware manufacturers.
